World Physical Activity Day is celebrated worldwide annually on 6 April. Our UNESCO Chair on Physical Activity and Health in Educational Settings supports this event by focusing specifically on under-resourced settings.

As part of the World Physical Activity Day, the aim is to integrate physical activity more closely into everyday life as a key component of a healthy lifestyle. The UNESCO Chair supports this World Physical Activity Day through the KaziBantu initiative and emphasises the importance of physical activity for education, health and social participation.

Regular physical activity has been proven to help prevent numerous non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and depression. At the same time, it can improve general well-being, strengthen social bonds and boost cognitive abilities, particularly in children and young people. Nevertheless, according to recent studies, many people worldwide do not achieve the recommended level of physical activity.

The UNESCO Chair therefore advocates for interdisciplinary approaches that bring together education, science and policy. The aim is to develop sustainable strategies to promote physical activity in schools and communities. Programmes that make physical activity fun and inclusive are at the heart of this effort.

The message is clear: every form of physical activity counts. Whether it’s walking, sport or active mobility in everyday life. Small changes can have a significant impact on health over time. The UNESCO Chair sees this global day of action as an important opportunity to take shared responsibility and promote physical activity as the key to a sustainable and healthy future.
