The UNESCO Chair on ‘Physical Activity and Health in Educational Settings’ participated in the 2026 UNESCO CIGEPS Session at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The meeting brought together international experts and policy makers to advance inclusive, equitable and safe sport and Physical Education, while providing valuable opportunities for dialogue, collaboration and knowledge exchange.

The UNESCO Chair on ‘Physical Activity and Health in Educational Settings’ at the University of Basel and Nelson Mandela University, represented by programme coordinator Dr. Ivan Müller, participated in the 2026 Ordinary Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS), which took place on 15 and 16 June 2026 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The session brought together representatives of UNESCO Member States, international organizations and key stakeholders committed to advancing inclusive, equitable and safe sport and Physical Education worldwide.

The 2026 session focused on the development of Global Policy Standards for Inclusive, Equitable and Safe Sport and Physical Education (click here for the latest report: ‘Toward Safe Sport: Policy Recommendations from People Impacted by Violence’), which are expected to contribute to preparations for MINEPS VIII in 2027. Discussions also addressed disability, inclusion, safe sport, gender equality and the latest findings from the Global Sport Policy Survey. The UNESCO Chair contributed to the exchange on ‘Good Practices’, sharing relevant experiences from its work in the field of physical activity and health in educational settings. In addition, progress within the ‘Fit4Life in Emergencies’ initiative was highlighted, reflecting ongoing project activities aimed at strengthening physical activity promotion and health in emergency and crisis contexts. Participation in CIGEPS once again highlighted the importance of international collaboration and evidence informed policy development in promoting physical activity, health and quality Physical Education across educational settings.

The UNESCO Chair appreciated the opportunity to contribute to these relevant discussions and to exchange perspectives with colleagues and partners from around the world. The UNESCO Chair extends its appreciation to the members of the UNESCO CIGEPS Secretariat, in particular Nancy McLennan, Philipp Müller-Wirth, Giulia Scacchi, and Fabiana De Freitas Buroz, as well as to the external guest speakers, for their extensive preparation and organization of the conference. Their professionalism, commitment and attention to detail ensured not only an excellently managed event, but also the delivery of valuable content that will continue to support the global advancement of Physical Education and sport policy. Their dedication made this meeting an enriching and inspiring experience for all participants. Concluding, the UNESCO Chair remains committed to supporting UNESCO and the CIGEPS community in their efforts to strengthen the role of Physical Education, physical activity and sport as drivers of health, inclusion and sustainable development.
