Signing of joint declaration of intent on cooperation

Declaration of intent between the University of Basel and the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE) has been signed.

The intended exchange activities will be supported by the Health and Wellness Directorate, Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology and the exchange between the two UNESCO Chairs in 'Higher Education' on the Mauritian side and in 'Physical Activity and Health in Educational Settings' on the Swiss/South African side will be strengthened. Within the framework of the UNESCO Chair, which is valid until 2027, the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE), Dr. Sookhenlall Padaruth, and the University of Basel, Prof. Uwe Pühse and Dr. Ivan Müller, have jointly identified the following areas of activity based on the local context, needs and motivation:

  1. Revision of the Physical Education Curriculum: research to identify gaps and new areas to be developed and to revise the Curriculum for Physical Education at pre-school, primary and secondary levels;
  2. Development of KaziKidz - Mauritian version;
  3. Compilation of action/intervention research, e.g. measurement of PA levels of school children using actigraphs to contribute to the rewriting of the Physical Activity card (Mauritius version 2024);
  4. Development of joint research projects with the MIE and the University of Basel;
  5. Student exchange programs between the MIE and the University of Basel; and
  6. Continuous professional development programs for Physical Education teachers in Mauritius.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be developed to formalise the intentions of both parties.
