News from the KaziBantu study among children from low-income communities in Gqeberha

An article titled, “Relationship between body mass index and physical activity among children from low-income communities in Gqeberha, South Africa: A cross-sectional study”, was published on 12 January 2023 by Dolley et al. This sub-study of the KaziBantu project aimed to establish the prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity, the level of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and the association thereof among vulnerable children from low-income communities in South Africa. Thus, future research intervention strategies addressing physical inactivity in South Africa should focus on sub-groups, such as girls and children with excess weight. Concerted efforts should also be made to inform children, parents and teachers alike about the role of physical activity and healthy eating as a preventative strategy to mitigate future non-communicable disease risk. Accompanying longitudinal research may also investigate the personal and social supportive roles of family members, peers and teachers for physical activity.
