The KaziKidz book (Grade 4-7) complements the two existing comprehensive teaching materials to form a trilogy for the school levels Pre-Primary until Grade 7. This trilogy combines physical activity, learning and hope in a freely accessible resource that shows how Physical and Health Education can foster motor competencies, resilience, self-confidence and new opportunities among children in South Africa and Namibia.

The KaziKidz initiative continues to expand its international impact with the publication of new open access teaching and learning materials designed to strengthen Quality Physical Education, health promotion, and school readiness in underserved educational settings.

The latest contribution ‘KaziKidz Book (Grade 4-7): Teaching Material for Physical and Health Education Resources for Intermediate/Senior Phase Teachers supported by UNESCO - South African Edition’, 572 pages), published on Zenodo, forms part of the growing KaziKidz book trilogy developed through long standing collaboration between researchers and educators from Switzerland, Namibia, and South Africa. The publication further reinforces the mission of the UNESCO Chair on ‘Physical Activity and Health in Educational Settings' to promote inclusive, evidence based, and culturally relevant Physical Education worldwide.

The KaziKidz materials provide practical and easy to implement lesson plans that integrate movement, health education, psychosocial wellbeing, and active learning into everyday school environments. Designed especially for teachers working in low resource contexts, the materials support children’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development through playful and engaging activities. The compendium is intended primarily as a resource for school libraries, enabling Physical and Health Education teachers to reproduce selected materials for use in their lessons. The compendium aims to provide:

  1. A comprehensive collection of knowledge in the field of Quality Physical Education (QPE), as defined by UNESCO, within a single publication;
  2. A concise and accessible presentation of essential QPE content for Grades 4–7, simplifying more extensive and complex source materials; and
  3. A practical reference work for Intermediate and Senior Phase teachers, allowing information to be located quickly and easily.

Importantly, the publications are openly accessible through Zenodo, supporting UNESCO’s broader goals of equitable knowledge sharing and Open Science. By making high quality educational resources freely available, the KaziKidz programme contributes to teacher empowerment, sustainable development, and healthier school communities across South Africa and beyond.

The KaziKidz trilogy reflects more than a decade of interdisciplinary collaboration between universities, schools, ministries of education, and international partners. Inspired by Siya Kolisi’s outlook on resilience and opportunity, every child should be reminded that their beginnings do not define their future, but the effort, unity, and courage they bring to play and learning can shape something far greater.
