Earlier this month, Nandi Joubert presents her research, "A hidden burden in a healthy workforce: First dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) evidence from the Eastern Cape", at the 18th World Congress on Public Health in Cape Town.

Using DXA and health assessments from 134 teachers at eight under-resourced public primary schools in Gqeberha, the research team found that 95% had at least one bone, fat or lean-mass risk, 35% had two or more overlapping risks and 53% met the criteria for metabolic syndrome. Despite this considerable burden, only 10–25% reported receiving treatment for cardiometabolic conditions.

These findings demonstrate why obesity alone does not capture the full extent of health risk and highlight the need for accessible workplace screening, prevention and stronger pathways from detection to care. It was especially meaningful to share research from the Eastern Cape on a global platform and contribute to discussions about protecting teachers’ health and well-being.
