Community kitchen training in the Siyaphakama Zwide school project

As part of the Siyaphakama Zwide school project, a sub-initiative of the KaziBantu research project, training courses on community kitchens were held at Nelson Mandela University.

Over the past two years, the KaziBantu project has established a collaboration with the Kolisi Foundation, the so-called ' Siyaphakama Zwide school project'. Together with the Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics at Nelson Mandela University, the aim was to improve access to safe, nutritious and culturally appropriate food in the community of Zwide, where Siya Kolisi himself grew up and which is located in the northern part of Gqeberha in South Africa. Due to the chosen One Health approach and the consideration of individual health as a whole (including its needs) in our learning environment, courses to expand and deepen knowledge in the area of nutrition were also offered in the school environment in addition to the exercise measures.

Food preparers had the opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge needed to make nutritious and healthy meals from experts in the field. This was to be achieved by training the food preparers of school and community kitchens through the bi-annual three-series nutrition and food safety training. Due to high demand and positive feedback from previous food preparation trainings, further corresponding courses are being planned.
